An Amazing Fact: Rachel Krishevsky was a God-fearing woman who knew the entire book of Psalms by heart. As an ultra-orthodox Jew, she also lived the commandment to “be fruitful and multiply.” When the 99-year-old great grandmother passed away in Jerusalem in September 2009, she left behind great-grandchildren and even great-great-grandchildren. Rachel and her husband Yitzhak had 11 children, who together produced 150 children of their own. All believing in being fruitful, Rachel’s prolific posterity continued to multiply into more than 1,400 souls. Her grandchildren say that up until she was 97, she knew all of her descendants by name!
The story of Rachel makes it much easier to understand how 70 Hebrews could grow into a nation of more than 2 million while living in Egypt for 200 years.
“The children of Israel were fruitful and increased abundantly, multiplied and grew exceedingly mighty; and the land was filled with them. But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew” (Exodus 1:7, 12).
Amazing Facts is also striving to be phenomenally fruitful, but we are thinking more of spiritual new births — like what happened during Pentecost — than biological multiplication. Look how the church grew when God poured out His Spirit:
“Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls” (Acts 2:41).
That was only the beginning. A few days later, we read:
“Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand. … And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly” (Acts 4:4, 6:7).
Notice these verses all mention the preaching of the Word in connection with this phenomenal multiplication of souls.

For instance, when Michael met Dominique at college, she was a backsliding Christian and he had never heard of the Sabbath. And this story really is just the tip of an iceberg of people hungering for the truth. We could reach so many more, but it will require sacrifice and prayer. Remember, Jesus said, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest” (Luke 10:2).
